Beautiful Ladd's Addition
Palio Dessert and Espresso House is located in Historic Ladd's Addition. Bordered by Division, Hawthorne, 12th and 21st Streets in Southeast Portland, Ladd's Addition is the first planned community in the Pacific Northwest and one of the oldest in the Western United States.
The neighborhood is laid out in a wagon wheel with a center circle and diamond-shaped rose gardens to the north, south, east, and west of the circle. There are over 3,000 rose bushes in Ladd's. Friends of Ladd's Addition Gardens, a local nonprofit, organizes pruning or "deadheading" sessions throughout the summer to assit the one city-assigned gardener for the entire neighborhood.
Whether it's for the children's Halloween parade, or Easter egg hunt in the circle, deadheading sessions, art walks, or the occasional wedding, Palio's is always a place where the neighborhood meets. Students and remote workers use Palio as their study/work base and there's always high quality caffeine to fuel the brain.
Palio's has been a cafe and meeting place in Ladd's Addition for 21 years and has been owned by Rand Benfiet for 11. Prior to its life as a cafe, Palio was the Ladd Circle Grocery. Photo available for purchase from Tweten Photography.
